I used Nigella Lawson's Chocolate Cherry cupcakes except I made a small mistake reading the recipe...my mother had described them as having a cherry in the middle so I read over the ingredients with that biased lens and anyhow I didn't buy any cherry jam. So instead I mashed up some cherries to use. I haven't tasted any, so I don't know how they turned out. I hope ok.

    Let You Down
Waiting at the station on a train,
    way too tired to complain.
    A promise is a promise,
    no matter who it's to,
and I just remembered what I promised you:

all I have and everything I own --
this credit card, a broken heart and phone.
I told you I'd be there before
the paper even hits your porch
to tell you what you've always known--

that I will let you down, believe me,
    I will let you down.
I will let you down real easy,
    I will let you down.

I knew as soon as we had met that night
that I was gonna want to see you twice.
Talking in and out of love,
you learn not to push your luck
even when the stars are right.

Something in you made me open up
a side of me that I'd always kept shut.
    Feelings never seem to be
    coming to me naturally--
I'd really like to stay here but

well, I will let you down, believe me,
    I will let you down.
I will let you down real easy,
    I will let you down.

When it comes to matters of the heart,
eventually we all show who we are.
A mystery of time and place
you can't miss what don't go away,
and at the end is where we start.

And I will let you down, believe me,
    I will let you down.
I will let you down real easy,
    I will let you down.

    I'm Right Here, My Love
    Can you hear my crying?
    (I'm right here, my love.)
    The unknown is frightening.
    (I'm right here, my love.)
Worlds far apart can't separate us.
    I can hear you crying--
    I'm right here, my love.

    Do you recall my kiss?
    (I'm right here, my love.)
    I wish life was endless.
    (I'm right here, my love.)
Living costs something and pay it we must.
    I recall your kiss--
    I'm right here, my love.

    Can you feel me tremble?
    (I'm right here, my love.)
    I feel like you remember.
    (I'm right here, my love.)
The future is short in the pulse of our blood.
    I can feel you tremble--
    I'm right here, my love.

    Can you sit closer?
    (I'm right here, my love.)
    Watch me pass over?
    (I'm right here, my love).
We did not give in and we did not give up.
    Watch you cross over--
    I'm right here, my love.

    Can you hear me crying?
    I'm right here my love.
    Thunder and lightening--
    I'm right here my love.
Worlds far apart can't separate us.
    I can hear you crying--
    I'm right here my love.
    I can hear you crying--
    I'm right here my love.

    Things I've seen lately:
    1. Vantage Point: fast & fun.

    2. Hancock: weird, but ok on dvd.

    3. Sky High: silly and predictable but still kind of fun.

    4. Light in the Piazza (at Main Street Theater): not very good. Maybe it was this production? The musical won a lot of awards, but I was not a fan.

    5. Eat Drink Man Woman: good.

    6. Spring Awakening (at Hobby -- the Off Broadway premiere): amazing. I love the music, but seeing it on stage was a whole other level of amazing. The dancing (and energy) is just ridiculous. Seriously, if you have a chance to see this, definitely do, and if not, at least listen to the music.

    7. (Listen to) For Crying Out Loud (Scott Miller): it's no secret I'm a huge Scott Miller fan. It's an excellent cd. I think my favorite is I'm Right Here, My Love, which goes into his folksy love song category with Angels Dwell and I'll Go to My Grave.

    Crayola doesn't make a color

I went to see the doctor. I’d come down with the blues.
She said “No, I can’t cure you, but I know something you can do.
Take out a piece of paper, and sit down for a while,
and draw a pretty picture of something that makes you smile.”
Well, I know what makes me happy. Didn’t have to think for long.
But when I tried to draw it, it always came out wrong.
    I had a box of 12, 48 and 64,
but nowhere could I find that one shade I was looking for.
I guess I realized shoulda come as no surprise

Crayola doesn’t make a color for your eyes.
There is no way that I could possibly describe you.
Crayola doesn’t make a color to draw my love.

At first I thought of Green Blue, but then I saw Blue Green.
And then sometimes in bright light, they look Aquamarine.
I think at night they’re darker. I looked again for you.
Saw Grey and Black and went out walkin’ after Midnight Blue
But the hues of the deepest skies would be a compromise...

Crayola doesn’t make a color for your eyes.
There is no way that I could possibly describe you.
Crayola doesn’t make a color to draw my love.

Spring Green is much too yellow, Sea Green is far too pale.
Cornflower’s way too mellow, so I’ll try again and fail.
There’s no way I can capture the way you make me feel.
One look from you is rapture, whether Blue or Green or Teal.
No color qualifies. That crayon’s telling lies...

Crayola doesn’t make a color for your eyes.

Hey look, it’s Periwinkle. So sure I got it now.
But you wink and there’s a twinkle in your eye and still, somehow,
I just can’t get that sparkle. Those glitter crayons won’t.
Maybe Glow-In-The-Dark’ll get it right. Aw, no they don’t.
Mr. Crayola tries, but I’m left to fantasize...

Crayola doesn’t make a color for your eyes.

For your eyes, something darker let’s see what I can find.
Melted mahogany and got the depth not the shine.
Just about gave up and then I peeled the paper off a little end of…
Really thought it coulda been… ahh, not even Burnt Sienna!
Your passport says they’re brown, but I’m gonna keep lookin’ round…

Crayola doesn’t make a color for your eyes.
There is no way that I could possibly describe you.
Crayola doesn’t make a color to draw my love.

    Sin in Indiana
    Henry Streeter owns this town.
Parks on the sidewalk and he beats men down.
His wife was pictured in a magazine--
he brought her over from the Philippines.
You can see her about five o'clock
on the hood of his car on the town sidewalk.

Well it starts in Minnesota as a tiny stream,
it's rolling like a river down in New Orleans.
Sin in Indiana -- it's a powerful thing.

    Chalmer Wolcott's the biggest liar--
drinks bottled water but can still breathe fire.
Got half a finger but he's twice as mean
    as a boilermaker with amphetamines.
He's a deacon down at the church
but there's porn in the corn so there's plenty of work.

Well it starts in Minnesota as a tiny stream,
it's rolling like a river down in New Orleans.
Sin in Indiana -- it's a powerful thing.

    Magnolia Hempstead could not stop
eating popcorn when she's high on pot.
She kept on chewing 'til her teeth were gone.
The dentist makes them out of cut limestone.
You can always tell she's been around
'cause there's tombstones growing where she spits in the ground.

Well it starts in Minnesota as a tiny stream,
it's rolling like a river down in New Orleans.
Sin in Indiana -- it's a powerful thing.

Cheap Ain't Cheap (For Crying Out Loud)
    I've got nothing for you
but you keep sticking your hand out,
I've done all I can do
so you do the best that you can now.

    'Cause cheap ain't cheap
but it is when it's free.
    The dollar's weak
    but it's stronger than me.
    I'm so damn broke
    that I can't even pay
attention to anything that you say.

    Go look into the sun
and you just might see the future
    I can't help what's already done
but we don't have to do what we use to.

    It's a well-worn path
    that leads to the door.
    They're well-worn tracks
    'cause I've been here before.
    There's hard times coming
    in case you don't know.
    The way she's coming
    I think she's gonna blow.

And I just wanna be gone
but I don't want to have to travel.
    Do anything for too long
and the fun part starts to unravel.
    It's a damn fine mess
    that I've got myself in.
    I'd ask for help
if I knew where to begin.
    There's no such thing
    as an easy way out.
    They'll hang you high
    for crying out loud.

    I've got nothing for you.

    I've got nothing for you
but you keep sticking your hand out.
I've done all I can do
so you do the best that you can now.

    'Cause cheap ain't cheap.
    The dollar's weak.
    I'm so damn broke.

I do the best that I can now.

    All right.
My computer has once again started up, but it is not problem-free, and it is still making those angry hard drive sounds (that specific angry beep), so I think it is time to think about a new one. I want a macbook. Does anyone have suggestions for things to add to it/memory needed/processing speed or whatever etc.?

    yay!
My computer is working -- at least temporarily! Very happy. Booted it up in safe mode and made back ups of stuff, now it's working in regular mode, not entirely enthusiastic about its lifespan from now on out.

Oh grocery shopping, you're my best excuse not to do school work.
I had some travel difficulties yesterday that meant my flight didn't get in until 2 am this morning. So after lunch today, my thinking went something like extreme sleepiness + lack of food in house + electricians working in my office = legitimate excuse to go home early.

I just got ingredients for cupcakes (theme: winter wonderland!), gingerbread (in my spiffy gingerbread man pan!), and peppermint fudge. I'm pretty excited. Also! A key ingredient for yummy mac and cheese with roasted grape tomatoes that I never have on hand. So now I just need the tomatoes. And cheese.

    2. Have candy corn for the nose & feathers (I checked Wegmans and CVS and came up short, so instead took starbursts, rolled them flat and cut them into triangles).
    3. Better on the eyes (but seriously -- you were suppose to have chocolate and vanilla frosting JUST FOR THEM. seemed like a big frosting commitment for a small payoff, so I used slices of marshmallows and caramel frosting).
    3. Waddle (could've used fruit roll-ups but,,,didn't).
    4. Brown sprinkles (but Neil and I both failed at finding them. you know, at the one place we both looked. but still!).

They're back and bolder this time around
I HATE MICE. Woke me up again at 4 am this morning and were especially loud -- turns out that's because they were chewing through the bag of flax seed on my counter. This is too much.

Just finished mixing a ton of poison with peanut butter* and baiting traps and just generally putting out poison. They need to die very soon.

I think I'm moving to a new apartment when my lease is up. Unfortunately (but probably a good thing) that's not until spring.

*Last time I baited traps with peanut butter and they loved the peanut butter -- ate it all -- but never set off the traps. This time, it won't matter whether they actually set them off or not.
